Proton radiotherapy for children at the Bronowice Cyclotron Center at IFJ PAN step by step


As a result of the efforts of the Pediatric Proton Therapy Oncology Team, comprising four institutions:

  • National Institute of Oncology named after Maria SkÅ‚odowska-Curie – National Research Institute (NIO-PIB) Branch in Kraków,
  • NIO-PIB Branch in Gliwice,
  • University Children's Hospital in Kraków,
  • Henryk NiewodniczaÅ„ski Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IFJ PAN),

since 2022, proton therapy for pediatric patients has been resumed at the Cyclotron Center Bronowice (CCB) IFJ PAN.

In the accompanying video, together with the animated character Ania and her companion Proton, we can follow step by step how a young patient is prepared for proton therapy and what the irradiation process looks like at CCB IFJ PAN. The film features IFJ PAN staff and Dr. Katarzyna Drosik-Rutowicz, a physician at NIO-PIB Branches in Gliwice and Kraków, who discuss the physical principles of proton beam therapy and guide the patient through all stages of treatment.
