Radiotherapy procedure

Radiotherapy procedure

The procedure of eye melanoma proton radiotherapy consists of several stages. The first stage is realized at the Department of Ophthalmology and Ocular Oncology of the University Hospital in Krakow, where diagnostic tests are conducted, the size and localization of the tumour are precisely defined, and then tantalum markers, necessary for X-ray positioning, are surgically placed on the patients's eyeball.

Next stages of the procedure are realized at the Institute of Nuclear Physics PAN, where physicists in collaboration with physicians prepare the patient for irradiation. They conduct:

  1. Patient positioning
  2. Therapy planning (Eclipse Ocular Proton Planning system by Varian Medical Systems)
  3. Verification of the therapy plan
  4. Proton beam tumour irradiation
